A group of illiterate housewives started selling papads in 1959, armed only with rolling pins. What started with just seven women on a loan of Rs.80 has now grown into an enterprise owned by over 42,000 women, spread across 72 centres around the country. To provide identity to their product, they came up with the name Lijjat – an amalgamation of taste, quality and women’s dignity (ijjat).

From the inaugural day turnover of Rs 10 to the present profit in billions of rupees, this enterprise has empowered women across our country. Lijjat has also started exporting its products to countries like United Kingdom, the United States, the Middle East, Singapore, Netherlands, Thailand, and others.

Recognized by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad has won several national and international awards.

In 2009 they won the Best Women Entrepreneur Award by All India Manufacturers Organisation.

This Society is exemplary as it provides more and more employment with least investment to the uneducated and downtrodden women of our country. They even support each other with medical aid, need-based education loans and scholarships.

This has become a business of the women, by the women, for the women, irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Corporatization and professional management did not work here since women put their hearts and souls into it.

They are an epitome of woman entrepreneurship whose seeds were sowed more than 50 years back. Imagine the potential which the present generation enjoys.

‘To make something great out of nothing’ is the guiding light for this entrepreneurial journey. Born in a small town of Tarn Taran, near Amritsar in Punjab on July 17, 1982, Gurbaksh Singh Chahal, also known as G is the star of this story.
G’s parents received a visa for America through a lottery based system in India when he was three. With a wealth of only $ 25, his parents struggled hard to make a better future for their four children.
At school, this Indian Sikh boy with a turban was relentlessly abused emotionally for being different. While most of us were busy living a comfortable, carefree, crazy life at the age 16, this boy dropped out of high school and was amazed by the euphoria of the dotcom world. He started his stealth mission from the confines of his small room and developed Click Agents.
Click Agents was one of the first performance based advertising networks in the industry. G’s dad gave him one year to pursue his dreams with a condition that he would go back to high school if things didn’t turn out his way and the rest is an open secret.
Though G sold Click Agent to Value Click in November 2000 for $ 40 million, but the success story does not end here. His passion for the dotcom world intensified further and the result was Blue Lithium. He launched it at the age of 21 and it focused on data optimization, analytics and behavioral targeting. Blue Lithium was recognized as one of the top 100 private companies in America three years in a row. Unlocking the value at $300 million in cash, G sold this venture to yahoo on October 15, 2007.
By this time, there was no dearth of fame and name for G but what drove him to start his next venture, G Wallet, was his fervor for the dotcom world. G Wallet is a social currency platform for social media. G shares his journey with the world through his memoirs – The Dream.
